What is URL Masking? Print

  • 33

URL masking keeps one web address in your browser’s address bar while showing a page from another address.

For example, you could visit datapacket.net and see a page hosted at a different URL. With URL masking, the address bar would still show datapacket.net.

This is different from a redirect. A redirect takes you to the other address, and your browser shows that new URL. URL masking keeps the original address visible.

URL masking can make it harder for visitors to bookmark or share a specific page. It can also make it harder for search engines to understand which site contains the content.

If you want visitors sent to a different website, use a redirect. If you want your website to appear under your own domain, you can point the domain to your hosting account instead.
